Not only it has been a year since the pandemic hit all of us with all the challenges this has brought. The massive losses of life, jobs, personal safety have been mind blowing. We are facing a pandemic of mental health for so many reasons. And then, Houston had to face one of the worst freezes seen in history. The city was not prepared for it and the damages have been comparable to any hurricane or other natural disaster that the city has faced.
We have been able to help many families that due to loss of jobs or that are facing medical bills can no longer afford to have a home. In these challenging times many of these homes are no unlivable due to the pipe bursting and water damages that the freeze caused to them. In some cases the damages were extensive as the homes were old. Pipes busted in many different places of the house. And with the lack of professionals to help the homes sustained an even larger damage.
Mr. Gonzalez (changed his name to protect his privacy) reached out to us in 2019. He had lost his job due to an injury. Even if his wife also worked they could not afford their monthly mortgage payment. We reviewed the situation with Mr. and Ms. Gonzalez. They do not speak fluent English and were afraid to talk to the mortgage company. We helped them do that and re-structure their mortgage. So even if tight, they could afford to resume their payments with one income. Mr. Gonzalez reached out a few months later to let us know that he had recovered and was back at work. We provided guidance on how to use a budget so the family could start an emergency fund for rainy days. All of this at no cost to the Gonzalez family.
Unfortunately 2021 was not kind to them. Not only they lost a family member to Covid and had a number of medical out of pocket expenses, the galvanized piping in the home broke during the freeze. When Mr. Gonzalez reached out to us he was panicked and discouraged on the way he was going to be able to protect his family. They were behind on mortgage payments again and living in an inhabitable home.
We were able to negotiate the purchase of the home from them, no repairs needed, pay 6 months of rent in an apartment and pay for their moving expenses. Most important, they were able to sleep under a dry and warm roof.
